IN THE FIELD
The Foundation fulfills its mission by supporting a number of programs individually and in collaboration with other organizations. These programs represent the growing depth and breadth of Melvin Van Peebles interests and include:

DEVELOPING SKILLS: THE BOOKS PROGRAM
Since 2005 the MVP Foundation has worked with first graders from PS 123, the Mahalia Jackson school, to introduce good reading habits and provide them with gift certificates to purchase their own books. Many of the children live in shelters and have few possessions. Many have never entered a bookstore before. Students are brought back to the bookstore for repeat visits once in their second and third grade years to continue to foster good reading habits and a love of literature.

PROMOTING FAMILY ACTIVITIES: APOLLO THEATER MOVIES FOR KIDS
The MVP Foundation supports the Movies for Kids program which opens up the theater to the community by offering free monthly screenings of first run family movies to young people and their families. A sentence about who they target The outreach program provides traditional entertainment at no cost while introducing young people to the Apollo Theater and its history.

REWARDING ACHIEVEMENT: SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
The Foundation supports students interested in the hard sciences. To date the foundation’s scholarships include a grant to the St. Kitts Technical College a division of the College of Further Education in St. Kitts, and a 2007 grant to cancer survivor Andre Singleton, a New School University student and is currently completing a semester at sea.
